Congratulations are in order, Ken Griffey Jr. got over the wall last night and made it into the history book, hitting his 600th career home run last night. The outfielder is just the 6th in history to achieve the milestone, and joins Barry Bonds, Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, Willie Mays and Sammy Sosa. The 38 year old hit a 413 ft. ball off a 3-1 count. Griffey received a standing ovation from the Marlins crowd of 16,003 and thanked them by coming out of the Reds dugout and waving his helmet to the fans. It took 216 at-bats to get to 600 - his last homer was on May 31.
"I got a call about 10 days ago from Willie [Mays]," Griffey said. "The next day I got one from Hank [Aaron]. They said, 'Hey, keep going, have some fun.' I think that helped me."
"I've been swinging the bat a lot better the last 10 days or so," Griffey said. "I was able to get the ball in the air. I wasn't beating the ball into the ground like I had been."
Red's manager Dusty Baker has been fortunate enough to be managing 3 of the 6 600 club members ( Griffey Jr., Sosa, and Bonds)
"It's awesome every time you see a milestone like that," Baker said. "It doesn't take away from the others. It adds to it."
