Last Politics Post I Swear...Back to Sports, SPORTS WOOOHOO!

I guess Byron York of the National Review summed up Republican hypocrisy on this matter in the following and he's a conservative:

"Perhaps I'm focusing on an irrelevant issue, but the presence, or non-presence, of Johnston on the stage tonight strikes me as important. It's one thing for delegates to be understanding and compassionate about the fix these two teenagers have gotten themselves into. It's another to actually celebrate it. And, given what we've learned in the last few days, if Johnston is up on stage with his girlfriend and the Palin family, and Republicans are wildly cheering, it will certainly look like they are celebrating this situation.

I don't usually engage in these scenarios, but I'll do it here. If the Obamas had a 17 year-old daughter who was unmarried and pregnant by a tough-talking black kid, my guess is if that they all appeared onstage at a Democratic convention and the delegates were cheering wildly, a number of conservatives might be discussing the issue of dysfunctional black families."

Thank you for pointing out what seems PAINFULLY obvious.

Blogosphere; US Open Tennis; tonight NBC is crying inside

NBC's ugly stepsister network ( which I love, umm hello? Burn Notice ROCKS!) is getting it's moment in the sun tonight; a MUCH anticipated US Open ladies quarterfinal match up between two of the sports premiere players who happen to have the same last name. Venus vs. Serena. Had Serena NOT played the tune up tournament in Hartford prior to the Open, she would have been on the other side of the bracket; giving NBC the rights to a probably 10 times more lucrative Williams v. Williams final. Win one for the little guys, and big strong women athletes, tonight.

NFL Update: Keeping guns out of kids hands, mediocre quarterbacks of the streets..err.field

On an obviously slow news day, or perhaps just to remind us in case we drank away half our brain cells this holiday weekend; Matt Leinart ( and Alex Smith) are NOT, I repeat, NOT good NFL quarterbacks. At All, end of story. Fortunately for us ( and the teams they play for) neither of them are starting for their respective teams this season.

Matt perhaps wouldn't feel so bad if he actually sat down and watched tape of his less than mediocre playing. Poor arm strength, slow feet, and sloppy play does not a starting QB make. There's always 'Dancing with the Stars' Matt, or perhaps a slot on the 98 degrees revival tour!

"What Alex Smith And Matt Leinart Tell Us About The Difficulty of Drafting Good Quarterbacks " [Fan IQ]

The Cleveland Browns feel as though they dodged a bullet, and that speeding bullet was a premature forced start to a "Brady Quinn Era". Having QB #1 Derek on the sidelines for the past few weeks with a concussion, the Brown were beginning to fear they would actually HAVE to PLAY the quarterback they went out of their way to draft during what could have only been a blackout due to carbon monoxide poising or something. So the Browns resorted to forcing Anderson back into practice, concussion be damned. With signs pointing to Anderson's return, the Browns still have a glimmer of hope at a successful season. And Brady Quinn can go back to keeping his legs in tip top tights shape.

"Browns Get Anderson and Edwards Back In Practice, Cleveland Panic Delayed" [NFL Fanhouse]

The New poster child for Anti-Abstinence-Only education

None other than the Republican Vp candidates daughter herself. Most likely to spare her daughter from any more humiliating headlines and image scrutiny; McCain running mate Sarah Palin released a statement that her 17 year old daughter Bristol is 5 months pregnant. The pro abstinence only, pro life candidate's release also stated that they plan on having they're daughter MARRY the teenage dirt bag as well.

Yeesh. Making your child put her young life on hold to birth and raise a baby is one thing, forcing a marriage between two teenagers as punishment for getting pregnant is quite another. I dunno maybe a little education on condom usage could have prevented this whole thing, or I dunno practicing the abstinence only that your preaching.....I'm just sayin'

Now I'm all for those who want to be pro choice, conservative family values etc. if that's they're choice. But come on. Mrs. Palin, perhaps this is a signal that maybe you have too much on your plate considering that while your out hunting moose, running your state, and getting your ex brother in law fired; your non contraceptive using child is out fornicating.

PhelpsFest 2008: Runs through the ladies like his breakfast runs through him

Well let's start the week off right, with some Michael Phelps...I know..... who?? Apparently Michael is on a press tour worthy of making you vomit, although I am surprised that I haven't heard SOOOO much about it.

Again, the only blip on the radar for me this week was another 'girlfriend' coming out of the woodwork. I wonder how Stephanie Rice feels about her? and vice versa, ha! Michael continues the delusional opinion that he can keep these things quite and that people like us won't find out about it, and more importantly won't CARE about it.

"I never said I have a girlfriend, and I never said I don't have a girlfriend," said Phelps. "My public and private life are separate. I keep my private life to myself."

Yeah, you keep thinking you can keep that up Michael; it's obviously working really well for you. The new woman is former Miss California USA runner up Nicole Johnson and has denied any relationship with Phelps, saying 'just friends'. Funny Amanda Beard, Nicole Johnson...all these women only want to admit being 'just friends' with the golden boy. Is it bad luck? or the fact that he is goofy looking with just a smidgen of arrogance? hmm.

Well, for the record, I wouldn't say 'just friends' Michael!

US Open Tennis: Ladies Scramble, Venus Rising

The top world ranking is ripe for the picking following Ana Ivanovic's early departure from Flushing Meadows. 4 other women including Jelena Jankovic, Elena Dementieva, Dinara Safina and Serena Williams could grab the top spot should they win out at the Open.

But the woman looking the most on her game in this first week is not even on the list of those slated to take over the world's top spot. Venus Williams has been utterly dominant, easily reaching the round of 16. She is on a crash course to meet none other than the last American woman to win in Flushing, her little sis Serena. They will potentially meet in the quarterfinals this week, but Venus has a victory in their last meeting ( the Finals of Wimbledon) on her side. And it looks like she too is feeling some momentum.

"I was young and didn't listen well. I'd like to think I'm wiser now. The Wimbledon win [her fifth Big W] helped me a lot to change my mentality, to realize not everything had to be perfect all the time. If I don't have a perfect practice, I know I can play, and don't really get upset about the whole tournament. I think that helps me relax and had a lot to do with playing well at Wimbledon."

NCAA Football: No, Thank YOU, Mr. Heisman.

Florida Gators 56, Hawaii Warriors 10
#5 Florida routed Hawaii, no shocker there. However the Gators have the sophomore Heisman Trophy winning, baby circumcising, superman Tim Tebow. Many ( Including myself) regarded Tebow's performance as average compared to the record breaking play he demonstrated last year. But this is not last year and Tebow doesn't seemed worried about his playing. Probably has something to do with the fact that it normally ends in victory.
“Aw, shucks,” Tebow said, mockingly, when asked about falling so far below the unrealistic pace he set for himself.

He took his girlfriend to the soda fountain for a 'swell' pop afterwards if you wanted to know. The question looming is whether Tebow can repeat a Heisman worthy season, which seems more unrealistic every game. The Gators have many more offensive weapons, so they will need to rely on Tebow far less to be a one man show. This is primarily due to a new running back presence in freshman Jeffery Demps. Demps was the leading rusher Saturday (76 yards on two carries), and also ran a 10.1 100 meters in the Olympic trials. That is good news for Tebow, because it will means he will take far less poundings than last year as he was forced so many times to run the football; and will probably prolong his short but already superb career.
I like that Tim displays a good attitude about not being so focused on individual stardom and rather team success. It may even benefit him in the long run; the MVP on the winning est team is almost always a front runner for the Heisman. He could end up on top again should the Gators keep winning.

ACC Football Opeing Weekend = Emasculation

Three top tier ACC teams played this weekend, all three went down. Not only were these embarrassing losses at the hands of non BCS conference teams ( Va. Tech v/ ECU) but the others were punishing beat downs by two top 25 teams.

#24 Alabama 34, #9 Clemson 10
Well I hope Clemson enjoyed that over hyped top ten ranking, because the Crimson Tide showed them last night that even a mid tier SEC team can destroy the best of what the ACC has to offer. A bigger ( averaging over 300 pounds each) FASTER, and surprisingly YOUNGER offensive and defensive line for Alabama; let handsome senior quarterback John Parker Wilson run the offense with confidence, giving him time to make plays. He was 22-of-30 passes for 180 yards with two touchdowns on the evening. Bama was most impressive with its time of possession offensively, and balance between the veteran efficiency of John Parker Wilson, and the explosiveness of the backfield. The Crimson Tide ran the ball 43 times without losing a yard, a streak that lasted into the game's 52nd minute. The Tide finished with 239 rushing yards on 50 carries, many racked up by true freshman running back Mark Ingram ( 96yds, 17 carries). Maybe the ACC should stick to basketball.

"Alabama almost makes Nick Saban smile, almost." [The Sporting Blog]

#3 U. Southern Cal. 52, U. Virginia 7

At the hands of another top 25 ranked team, the ACC Wahoo's of Virginia looked like boys playing with the men of the USC Trojans. In an old fashioned whooping, Trojan's HANDSOME quarterback Mark Sanchez threw for three touchdowns. What's more impressive is that he only needed 7 minutes 14 seconds of offensive possession to do it. Having been out three weeks from a dislocated kneecap, Sanchez looked like a potential Heisman trophy contender, going 26-for-35 for 338 yards. Famous UVA alums Tiki and Ronde Barber as well as Chris Long were sent to the exits by the second half, as much of the sold out UVA stadium was cleared out by then. Smells like school spirit! Pac 10 champs for six years running, USC looked well oiled and running on all cylinders going into at September 13th meeting vs. Ohio State; which could potentially affect the National Championship discussion.

So what can we take from Uva, Va. Tech, and Clemson? That for the casual football watcher your time is better spent watching Bama, USC, and maybe...yes...maybe..ECU.
